Mammal of the Month!

Stoat, photo by David Chapman

Stoat

Mustela erminea

The stoat can be distinquished from the weasel, as the stoat is larger and has a black tip to its tail.

These excellent hunters often forage along hedgrows and ditches, systematically searching for prey in zig-zag patterns.

If you do see a stoats, or any mammal, please do let us and the local record centre know.

We need to know WHAT you saw, WHERE and WHEN you saw it and WHO you are. Records can be sent direct to ERCCIS here.

Humane live small mammal traps were checked but unfortunately, none of the furry creatures were captured.  Never the less, some eager mammal tracking for field signs and nut hunting went ahead.

Someone with a very keen eye spotted the fresh badger droppings. Through the woodland, hazel nut shells on the ground were examined to find out which mammals had eaten them.

Small Mammals: January 2009

Led by Kim Jelbert and Jenny Stuart, attendees were given an opportunity to get up close to some small mammals as well as listen to a fascinating talk on harvest mice. None of these tiny British mammals were found, but everyone was still thrilled with our catches of voles and mice.

Dormouse Boxes: January 2009

Cornwall Mammal Group members helped to clean out 110 dormouse boxes at a Cornwall Wildlife Trust reserve, despite the freezing temperatures. They also replaced any boxes that were damaged, so ensuring dormice would continue to have summer nesting locations once they woke from their hibernation slumber.
